WE HEAR A LOT OF TALK ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF THE U.S. ATTACKING IRAN

We hear a lot of talk about the possibility of the United States making an attack on Iran.   President Bush has gone so far as to include, in his rhetoric, the mention of avoiding World War III in connection with Iran obtaining ‘the bomb’.

As a journalist who has spent time in the region I would strongly suspect that if Iran is going to be taken down by the United States, it intends to try to bring the Arab neighborhood down with it.

From intelligence reports we learn that Iran has already commissioned a notorious Hezbollah leader, to organize cells of Shiite operatives in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to fight against the United States and pro-US Arabs in the event of war against Iran.   Our sources say that trainees from the Persian Gulf region have already arrived in Lebanon and are conducting drills in the famous Bekaa Valley.   Beckaa Valley was rife with terrorist training camps during the 1980’s when we were in Lebanon in connection with covering the Lebanon Civil war.

Iran has a clear interest in raising the cost of a U.S. attack against the Islamic Republic by demonstrating its ability to retaliate through Shiite militant assets throughout the region.   Iran projects these thoughts to the Gulf States for something to think about as our U.S. defense officials are now seeking those Gulf States to cooperate with the United States against Iran.  The Mid East tug of war is now underway.

Iran is in the deciding stages regarding how it wants to deal with the United States over Iraq.   Iran’s options range from entering into serious negotiations with Washington to….sticking to its guns and reaching out to the Russians for some short-term security guarantees.

Actually Iran has no solid guarantees against the United States making an attack.   So obviously Iran needs a good contingency plan to unleash…. should the United States attack Iran.

A part of that plan is…..if Iran is going to be taken down by the United States….then Iran intends to try to bring the Arab neighborhood down with it.    That is a frightening scenario of biblical proportions.

Sadly we were correct, early on, when we predicted President Bush would start something he would not be able to finish if…..the United States attacked Iraq six years ago.

Let’s hope we are incorrect in this prediction of what will happen should President Bush now make an attack on Iran.
