Elvis rocks harder than most singers who are younger and still alive. Had he lived, Elvis Presley would be 75-years-old today. Elvis was born in
Tupelo,
Mississippi on January 8th, 1935, and died in
Memphis on August 16th, 1977. At the time of his death, then President Jimmy Carter credited Mr.Presley with "changing the face of American popular culture."
Festivities are already under way at Presley's Graceland home in
Memphis, where activities include special tours, film screenings and dances.Government officials were on hand for the proclamation of the annual Elvis Presley Day in
Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee. The ceremony included a special birthday cake-cutting with Elvis' daughter Lisa Marie Presley and his ex-wife Priscilla Presley.
The NBA's Memphis Grizzlies will honor Elvis at Friday's basketball game against the Utah Jazz by wearing "blue suede shoes" as Elvis-themed music and performances helps entertain the crowd. On Saturday, the Memphis Symphony will play a program of Presley music, and the
Memphis’ Elvis Birthday Bash will last into the wee hours along
Beale Street. On Sunday, Elvis' backing vocal group, The Imperials, will perform at
Graceland.
If you can't make it, you can tune to Turner Classic Movies for an Elvis marathon. Friday night, you can watch the1972 documentary that shows his public and private sides “Elvis On Tour" on TCM. And if you’re into retail, tune into QVC. The home shopping network plans "Elvis Tributes" Friday, offering Presley items to viewers
