The odds that one person would hit three scratch-off tickets and one lottery jackpot for a combined total of
$21 million are astronomical. Mathematicians say the chances are as slim as 1 in 18 septillion — that's 18 and 24 zeros. But that what has happened to 63-year-old Joan Ginther, formerly of Bishop
Texas, but who now lives in
Las Vegas. Those who knew her in
Texas say she doesn’t own a cell phone, and she drove around Bishop in an unpretentious Nissan.
They also say that she’s a very generous woman. She once bought a car for someone down on their luck, she bought a van for a church, and when she moved, she donated her home to charity.
Ginther won $10 million last month on a $50 scratch-off ticket she bought at the Times Market gas station. It’s also where she bought her last two winning tickets, which is now ground zero for desperate lottery players who hope her good lucky will rub off on them, So how does she do it? It’s not known how often she plays and Ginther has never spoken publicly about her lotto winnings. Texas Lottery spokesman Bobby Heith says the agency has never investigated her winnings, but their verification system is very thorough.
