The 2010 Winter Olympics begin tonight on a somber note, following the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili, a men's luger from the former Soviet
republic of
Georgia, who died following a crash during training. An Olympic official with direct knowledge of the situation, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, says Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled near the finish Friday, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center.
The Olympic crowd of 60,600 will witness the first-ever indoor opening ceremony. Other than that, little is known about the opening ceremony and the biggest mystery remains the identity of who will light the Olympic cauldron. Rumors are circulating that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky could be the chosen one for the historical moment at the conclusion of the ceremony.
Rams owner Chip Rosenbloom says he and Lucia Rodriguez are proud to welcome Shahid Khan to the Rams fold. The current owners have signed an agreement to sell the team to the
Illinois businessman and his family. Rosenbloom said he thought Khan would make great contributions to the NFL.
The Blues play their second-to-last game before the Olympic break Friday night as they host the Maple Leafs at
Scottrade
Center. The Note opened their current three-game home stand Tuesday with a 4-3 win over the Red Wings.
St. Louis is now five points behind third-place
Detroit in the Central Division, and just two points ahead of last-place
Columbus. The Blues will head into the break after hosting the Capitals tomorrow night. While most of the team will have two weeks off, Note players David Backes, Erik Johnson and Roman Polak are headed to
Vancouver. Backes and Johnson will represent the
United States and Polak will play for the
Czech
Republic.
Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo continues to put together his coaching staff for the upcoming season. "Spags" has appointed former Rams All-Pro safety Nolan Cromwell as the team's new wide receivers coach. Cromwell spent the last two years as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M and replaces Charlie Baggett.
With the start of Spring Training just around the corner, two truckloads of equipment are loaded and headed to Cardinals camp in Jupiter, Florida. A few players have already arrived in the warmer weather of
Florida for preliminary workouts ahead of schedule. Pitchers and catchers aren't required to report until next Wednesday, with the full squad arriving the following week. The Cardinals' first spring game is March 4th against the Mets.
