The Cardinals hung on for a 4-3 victory in Game Three of the NLCS over the Milwaukee Brewers. Albert Pujols hit an RBI double off Yovani Gallardo during a four-run first inning and four St. Louis relievers combined for four perfect innings to help starter Chris Carpenter pick up the win. St. Louis leads the best-of-seven series 2-1 heading into tonight's Game Four.
Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman has been named National League Comeback Player of the Year. Berkman batted .301 with 31 home runs and 94 RBIs in 2011, his first season with the Cardinals. The 35-year-old played in 145 games and responded to a disappointing 2010 season where he hit just .248 during stops with the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.
The Blues and Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer are reportedly close to signing a purchase agreement. The "Post-Dispatch" reports the two sides already have a verbal agreement in place for the sale of a majority stake in the team, although it would still have to be approved by the NHL. That could take several weeks. Hulsizer is the founder and CEO of Chicago-based financial services firm PEAK6, and received unanimous approval by the league's Board of Governors in 2010 when he was attempting to buy the Phoenix Coyotes.
There are high expectations for Saint Louis University this season under head coach Rick Majerus, and that's reflected in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. After finishing in 11th place in the Atlantic 10 last season with a 6-and-10 league mark, SLU was picked to finish third this season in the poll by conference coaches and media. The team returns every key player from last season, and welcomes back point guard Kwamain Mitchell after missing last season because of a university suspension. Mitchell was named to the second-team all-conference preseason squad.
