The Wentzville Board of Aldermen have given their approval to a subsidy for Ranken Technical college to establish a satellite campus in the city.
The board voted 5 to nothing this week to approve a city subsidy of as much as $360,000 to help entice Ranken to set up the satellite campus. If Ranken's board approves the deal as expected, classes could begin in Wentzville by the fall semester, this school year.
Supporters of the plan say Ranken would offer courses that are not currently offered in
St. Charles
County and help add to a base of workers with technical expertise for local companies such as General Motors. They also feel the school would help attract other companies to the area.
Under the proposal, Ranken would locate at a site in the city and the city would pay rent of as much as $80,000 a year for whatever building is selected as their site. The city would also pay $120,000 to support staffing at the site.
City officials are hoping to get corporations and others to cover some of the city's dollar commitment.
