O’Fallon police, determined to recover a Teflon-coated escape artist and burglar after he wriggled out of handcuffs, and engaged in a high speed pursuit down Interstate 70 that ended with his arrest in
Warren
County on Thursday. Police responded to a reported burglary on
Sleighridge Court at 3 am in which nothing was taken and discovered the suspect sleeping in his vehicle at about 7:40 a.m. The officer fastened a handcuff to one of the man's wrists, but then the suspect awoke and drove off down Highway 40, losing the officers briefly
Police relocated him about an hour later on Wild Oak Drive near the Springhurst subdivision, but he took off again and led police west on Highway N, north on Highway Z to westbound Interstate 70 toward a construction zone in Warren County at speeds upwards of 80 mph. Authorities laid down spike strips and that finally stopped the man's vehicle. He was taken into custody at just past nine am and taken to jail. No injuries were reported throughout the chase, and charges were pending Thursday.
