A hearing on a protection order against State Representative Brian Nieves has been delayed.

Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem postponed Thursday’s scheduled hearing on whether to order Nieves to stay away from a rival candidate's staff member until September 20.

Nieves' attorney said he requested the delay so he could review a recently amended petition filed on behalf of Shawn Bell. Bell was the campaign manager for Dick Stratmann, whom Nieves defeated in the August 3 Republican primary for the 26th District State Senate seat. Bell is seeking an order of protection after claiming that Nieves assaulted him when he visited Nieves' campaign office the day after the primary. An investigation into the alleged assault was conducted by the Washington police department and the results have been turned over to the Franklin county prosecutor’s office.

Nieve’s attorney calls the allegations against his client baseless.
