Plans for a community recreation center in St. Charles have been put on hold indefinitely due to the poor economy.

St. Charles Mayor Mayor Patti York released a joint statement with  Belinda Jones, president of ShowMe Aquatics and Fitness Thursday stating that the project can't move forward until the economy improves.   The St. Charles City Council and ShowMe have been working for several months to find a workable financial plan.

St. Charles voters approved a $30 million bond issue in August 2008 for a long-debated community recreation center. Plans called for building a 120,000-square-foot center along Interstate 70 between First Capitol and Hawks Nest drives. But demolition of a former Kmart store on the site has been delayed for months, and the city has yet to issue the bonds, partly because of recession-related fundraising difficulties for ShowMe.
