Discussions from the St. Louis area regarding who would win the Mr. Show-Me Basketball award, centered around Drew Hanlen of Webster Groves, Kramer Soderberg of St. Charles West, Torres Roundtree of McCluer North, and Scott Suggs of Washington.
The favorites appeared to be Hanlen and Soderberg, since each of them overcame injuries to lead their teams to the state championship game. Hanlen helped Webster win the Class 5 state championship, while Soderberg helped West finish 2nd in Class 4. However, they had good supporting casts around them. That is why Scott Suggs is the winner of the top individual honor in Missouri high school basketball.
Suggs had some talent surrounding him in the 2007-08 edition of the Washington Blue Jays. But, Suggs had to carry a much heavier scoring load than the other finalists from the St. Louis area, against a constant double- or triple-team defense from his opponents. Still, Suggs managed to average 22.5 points, 9 rebounds, and 2.8 blocked shots per game.
More importantly, Suggs helped Washington High School post a 20-8 record and its first district championship in 23 years. He will take his considerable talent to the University of Washington, where he will play for former St. Louis U. head coach Lorenzo Romar.
