One would think that averages of 28.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 5.2 blocked shots per game would give a basketball player like Kathleen Scheer of New Haven a sure-fire chance to win the "Miss Show-Me Basketball" award.
However, Scheer was not able to win the award that goes to Missouri's top senior girls basketball player.
Unfortunately, Yvonne Anderson of Columbia Hickman posted similar numbers, and her Columbia Hickman team was even more dependent on her, than Scheer's Lady Shamrocks of New Haven. As a result, Anderson was chosen to become Miss Show-Me Basketball for 2008.
Yvonne Anderson is the daughter of Mike Anderson, the men's head basketball coach at the University of Missouri. However, she won the award on her own merits, averaging 23.6 points per game and leading her Kewpies in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals. And, if it wasn't for Anderson's tour-de-force performances, Columbia Hickman would've finished far worse than its 20-7 record.
Her last high school game epitomized Anderson's dominance. Against her crosstown rivals, the eventual Class 5 state champion Rock Bridge Bruins, Anderson scored 43 of her team's 50 points by making 16 out of 23 shots from the floor, and 9 out of her 10 free throws.
Anderson and Scheer never played against each other in high school, since Columbia Hickman is a large Class 5 school, while New Haven is a small Class 2 school in enrollment. However, they could meet in college in non-conference action, since Anderson is heading for the University of Texas, and Scheer will play at Duke University.
