The Flyers, Bruins, Devils and Flames were NHL playoff winners on Sunday.
In Washington, DC, Martin Biron made 24 saves to post his first playoff shutout as the Flyers blanked the Capitals 2-0 in Game Two of their first-round series. In doing so, the Flyers kept the league's leading scorer in check. The Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin, who had 65 goals in the regular season and had the deciding goal in their Game 1 victory over the Flyers, didn't have a chance to get his 2nd game-winning goal in as many nights. The best-of-seven matchup is now even at a game apiece, with Game Three Tuesday in Philadelphia.
In Boston, Marc Savard's first career playoff goal lifted the Bruins to a 2-1 overtime victory against the Canadiens. Savard was able to enter the ice as an extra attacker on a delayed Montreal penalty to score the winning goal. The Bruins snapped a 13-game losing streak against Montreal and they closed their series deficit to 2-1 in the best-of-seven set. The Bruins host Game Four Tuesday.
At Madison Square Garden, John Madden's fluke overtime goal gave the Devils a 4-3 win over the Rangers. Madden was simply trying to flip a centering pass toward the slot, when the pass deflected off the skate of the Rangers' Marc Staal and into the net.
New Jersey bounced back after losing the first two games at home, but still trails the best-of-seven series two games to one. The Rangers host Game Four on Wednesday.
In Calgary, the Flames overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat the Sharks 4-3. Owen Nolan's goal with 3:45 remaining lifted Calgary to victory. San Jose had a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, but it became the 2nd team in NHL playoff history to give up that early 3-goal advantage. The Flames lead the best-of-seven set 2-1, with Game Four Tuesday.
Tonight, the Penguins and Senators play Game Three of their first-round series in Ottawa, with the Penguins leading two-games to-none. The Red Wings take a 2-0 series lead to Nashville to play Game Three against the Predators. And, the Wild and Avalanche play Game Three of their first-round series in Colorado, with that matchup tied at a game apiece.
