The Pittsburgh Pirates were rude guests Monday night, as the Cardinals returned home from a 3-5 road trip.
The Pirates used a 4-run outburst in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Cardinals 8-4 last night.
The loss was the third in a row for the Redbirds and their sixth in the last seven games.
Veteran reliever Ron Villone was tagged with the loss. Rookie Marino Salas was a winner in his major league debut for the Pirates.
Among the Cardinals’ highlights:
Troy Glaus hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Birds a 3-2 lead. Albert Pujols added a solo shot that tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth, to extend his streak to 40 games in which he has reached base.
Despite the loss, the Cards remain a game behind the Cubs in the NL Central. The Cubs were 4-3 losers to
San Diego
last night.
The Cardinals and Pirates continue their series at Busch Stadium tonight. The Redbirds send Todd Wellemeyer to the mound, while the Pirates counter with Paul Maholm. Maholm is looking to even his record which stands at 2-3. He has an ERA of 4.79 and has a loss and a no-decision in his last two outings. Wellemeyer is 3-1 on the year with a 3.56 ERA. The veteran right-hander pitched six solid innings in his last start against

, but did not figure in the decision.
